A new mama recently asked us about belly binding since her foreign mother in law asked her why she wasn't doing it since it's common in her country.
Belly Binding is centuries old, cross cultural process of using belly binding or postpartum wrapping techniques to help the recovery process after childbirth. The hormone relaxin increases in pregnancy to allow our bodies to stretch and loosen things up for childbirth. Belly binding takes advantage of this softened state and pushes the separated abdomen back together as the body firms up. The typical recommendation is to begin belly binding on day 5 postpartum and continue 24/7 for two months. If you've had a c-section the typical recommendation is starting at 4-6 weeks postpartum for wrapping but some recovery girdles may be started as soon as you leave the hospital. Be sure to check with your doctor or midwife to get clearance on binding based on your healing.
Belly binding has many benefits and can help you to look, feel, and move better postpartum. Belly binding is largely recognized to help repair diastasis recti. Diastasis recti is where the large abdominal muscles have separated during pregnancy and can make moms continue to look pregnant when they are not. Belly binding isn't magic and is not a substitute for healthy eating and exercise.
There are a few ways to go about trying belly binding or postpartum wrapping. Here are some common methods
Buy a belly wrap like Belly Bandit
Buy a recovery girdle or faja
Buy a Bengkung wrap
